Jannis Vamvas (University of Zurich): LLMs and the Challenge of Romansh One language of Switzerland – Romansh – poses a challenge: Even the few LLMs that understand it are not good at speaking it, because they are unaware of its different varieties. This talk presents how we created the first variety-aware Romansh machine translation system, burning through thousands of dollars in API credits along the way – and why authentic, human-written text remains the gold standard in the age of LLMs.
